COACHES MEMO - No. 880
February 03, 2012
To: Coaches, players, and parents of
CFYSC and Dynamos teams
From: Olivier Finidori, Director of Training.
Written and edited by Jim Walker
DYNAMOS’ PUMA CUP
FEB. 11-12 , DYESS AND ZUBE
Editor’s note: This is information repeated from last week’s Coaches Memo because it is important that Dynamos Volunteer Coordinator Rachel Fritz complete her roster of volunteers for next weekend’s Puma Cup tournament, a major event for the Select program. The Puma Cup will be bigger than ever with more than 130 teams competing, so a large corps of volunteers is imperative. Please check the number below and give Rachel a call. She will appreciate it, and you will have a fun weekend at DyessPark and/or ZubePark.
Dynamos Puma Cup
VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED
By Rachel Fritz
I am coordinating volunteers for the 2012 Dynamos Puma Cup, Feb. 11-12. We are excited to be hosting this tournament again and need help to make it a success. Games will take place at both Dyess and Zube parks, so we will need more volunteers this year.Contact me directly at gfritz1@comcast.net if you are able to volunteer. Please let me know the team your child plays with, the day/time you would like to volunteer and a contact number.
Thanks in advance for your willingness to help! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Rachel Fritz
Dynamos Volunteer Coordinator
Looking Back
WANTED--Cordless phones. Loan of hand-held battery-operated telephones for use by field coordinators at Cy-Fair Valentine's Tournament. Air time costs will be reimbursed.--Item in January, 1993, issue of "Select Talk, Voice of Cy-Fair Select Soccer.”
2012 TRYOUTS SET
Dates for the Dynamos Select’s 2012 tryouts at DyessPark were announced this week by Director of Training Olivier Finidori. For under-11 through under-13 boys and girls, trial dates for selection to 2012-2013 teams will be held May 14,15, and 16. For under-14-and-up players, tryouts will scheduled for June 4, 5, 6, and 7. More information—eligibility, registration, exact days and times for each age group, and expectations of players and parents--will be posted here during the weeks leading up to tryouts.
ACADEMY TEAMS CRANK UP
Practice sessions for Academy players opened this week: girls on Monday, but Tuesday’s session for the boys was rained out, postponed until Thursday. Director of Training Olivier Finidori held an orientation meeting for the parents of the girls and planned to meet with parents of the boys before practice on Thursday. League play begins Sun., Feb. 19. Other play dates are Feb. 26; March 4, 25; April 1, 15, 22, 29; May 6. Games are scheduled for Meyer Park the first half of the season, and Katy Park the second half. There will be an occasional trip to South Campus (Loop 610 at Stella Link) when playing teams from south of Houston.
Bring Your Own Keeper
COACHES, PARENTS INVITED TO BYOK
A workshop for recreational and competitive coaches and parents, Bring Your Own Goalkeeper, will be held at DyessPark on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 4pm. Moderated by Dynamos goalkeeper trainer Jim Walker, the session is free and runs about one hour and a half. Each parent and coach who registers may bring a player who plays goalkeeper, or who aspires to be one. Parents and coaches will be asked to participate as servers in exercises that will help in game preparation and development of players interested in playing the position. It’s fun, and free, but registration is requested. To sign up, or if you have questions, email JWalker332@aol.com, or call 281-217-1612. Please give the keeper's name and age, and name of parent or coach accompanying him or her.
THE BUZZ
Daylight Saving Time begins March 11. . .It’s no race track! Please proceed with caution when driving through the DyessPark complex of softball and soccer fields and parking lots, not only where it appears congested but elsewhere as well. Stop signs mean stop, whether or not there are youngsters in sight. . .Former Dynamos player and Keeper Club stalwart Jonathan Kauffman has started to coach and train goalkeepers for a youth club near CentralBaptistUniversity where he will play in the fall after sitting out last season with a shoulder injury. Jonathan trained last summer with the Dynamos fitness program and also assisted during several Keeper Club training sessions during the Christmas holidays. Another former Keeper Club member turned coach, Michael Sicola, is featured (along with a photo) in the February issue of Keeper! Michael, who still plays in the Houston Football Association, is in his second year as goalkeeper trainer for St. Thomas High School in Houston. . .The United States women's national team is headed to the 2012 London Olympics after stopping Costa Rica, 3-0, then beating host Canada, 4-0, in the championship game of the Concacaf Olympic Qualifying in Vancouver last weekend. In the final, Alex Morgan, making her first start in the tournament, and Abby Wambach each scored twice. . .Tony Meola and Claudio Reyna, two United States national team heroes of the 90's, are on the National Soccer Hall of Fame ballot for the first time. Meola, the starting goalkeeper in two World Cups, and Reyna, who started in three World Cups, are 12 players in their first year of eligibility, Others on the ballot for the first time are Jose Burciaga, Jr., Ronald Cerritos, Lorrie Fair, Jen Lalor-Nielsen, Victor Noqueira, Cindy Parlow, Ante Razov, David Regis, Thori Staples Bryan, Greg Vanney, and Kerry Zavagnin. . .The Buzz welcomes players, coaches and parents to share their thoughts about soccer. News items, memories of a favorite game or player, ideas about improving the game, clippings, letters, and anecdotes will be accepted for publication. Simply email to: jwalker332@aol.com.
RULES CHANGES CONSIDERED
FIFA’s rules-making panel, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), will discuss at a March 3 meeting the possibility of allowing teams to use a fourth substitute in overtime. The IFAB members will consider whether increasing the current quota of three subs would help improve games and reduce injuries. Goal-line technology tests will return to the agenda and the IFAB will also study trials of the five-referee system, using additional assistants beside each goal to support referees’ decision-making.
QUOTABLE
“Short on time? Don’t skip the warmup! Before a tough game or training session, make sure you give your body the opportunity to stretch. Start with some gentle jogging to get your muscles warm and follow by stretching all the major muscle groups. This will help prevent injury and muscle cramping.” –Advice from Tony Meola, Former United States National Team goalkeeper and captain who appeared in two World Cups and a ten-year veteran of Major League Soccer
THOUGHT ON COACHING
“I don’t know whether yours is a good idea or a bad idea, but I am sure it is not a new idea. This doesn’t mean it can’t be successful. Recycling an old idea with a new twist, and managing it better than the last guy did, is one of the best way I know to be successful.”—Coach Harvey Mackay
ANOTHER THOUGHT
What can you say about a player who laughs at all the coach’s corny jokes? That’s one who doesn’t necessarily have good sense of humor, but sure has a good sense of direction.
IT’S ONLY FAIR
Do as you would be done by, is Coach Cy-Fair's succinct way of looking at the world. . .but it causes his grammar policeman friend to gnash his teeth. There’s no elevator to success, believes Coach Flo, you have to take the stairs.
