COACHES MEMO - No. 807
August 27, 2010

To:       Coaches, players, and parents of
             CFYSC and Dynamos teams

From:   Olivier Finidori, Director of Training.
Written and edited by Jim Walker

NO KEEPERS? NO PROBLEM!
A series of unexpected events armed the U19 Dynamos of Coach Mark Walaszczyk with a solid corps of talented field players, but no goalkeeper. Wait, did we say, NO goalkeeper? How about many keepers!! Trainer Olivier and Coach Mark employed no less than seven players in goal as the Dynamos tied Challenge 1-1 and overwhelmed Albion Hurricanes (5-0) and Lady Lions (7-1) in the Texas Warmup Cup at Burroughs Park. Parading out at intervals with gloves during the tournament (four in the opening game) were Claire Benson, Lynsey Curry, Lauren Wilmer, Nicole Funderburke, Aubrie O’Connor, and Brittany Robinett. All performed admirably, fronted by a sturdy defense featuring Lindsey Wells, Taylor Vatuna, Juliana Leon, Kacie Cardenas, Alexis Ledesma, and Alex Gonzalez, and the scoring feats of Lynsey Curry, Kadie Walaszczyk, Susan Roberts, Brittany Robinett and Kylee Mann.

U14 GIRLS GO 1-1-1
The U14 Dynamos of Coach Kreg Barrett are looking forward to the Austin Labor Day Cup after showing well in last weekend's Rush Cup at Bear Creek Park. "The rust was evident in our first game against Rush as the girls fell into a 2-0 hole by halftime," said Coach Kreg. "The alarm to start playing was ignited at intermission and Ashton Allison found the net two minutes into the second half." Then defender Shelby Stephenson delivered a left-footed lightning bolt from just inside the 18 after a splendid combination with Rachael Mann to deliver the final 2-2 score. It was the Emma Payne show in the second game, against Space City, as the Dynamos forward scored twice in the first half and slammed another shot off the woodwork, narrowly missing a hat trick. In the third game, the Dynamos lost a 1-0 decision to old nemesis National Fusion.

A VOTE FOR MARTY’S TEAM
In an email message to Director of Training Olivier Finidori, parent Stacy Austin expressed her feelings about the Dynamos’ white jerseys bearing the inscription “Marty’s Team” on the back, under the player number:
“When you first told us about Marty's Team, I thought it was a neat idea...nothing really more than that. Then last weekend, while walking towards Ky's (daughter Kylie) field, I was looking for her team and scouting for our jerseys. I saw a Marty's Team and a huge feeling of pride washed over me. What club would do that? Ours! A club of individuals with huge hearts. We were all lucky to know Marty and truly wished I'd known him more than just ‘hi.’ I realize he was a great friend of yours but bigger than that, this lettering allows the kids to honor him and keep a piece of him. This is brilliant! What a great decision! Thank you for yesterday's God sighting! Oh, a God sighting is where you see God working. You know I've had a huge struggle with Ky & her team. I've prayed immensely about it for the last four years. So when I saw Marty's team, it just brought full circle all the pieces I've discovered about this club and our involvement. It was God solidifying my decision to keep her here. Dynamos forward individuals, not the club. Thank you!”

OOPS
In listing players for Coach Ron Contreras’ U16 team in last week’s Coaches Memo, one of the many editors for this publication failed to catch that Regan Garant’s name came out “Ryan Garant.” Sorry, Regan, that your name was left out of the team, and sorry, Ryan, that you were included. After all, as Coach Ron pointed out, it couldn’t have been Ryan playing in the Aggieland Tournament; he was back in Houston. “He couldn’t be two places at once,” said the coach, not mentioning that Ryan not only isn‘t a girl, but too old.

BRIT NOTES U. S. PASSION
Members of the British press like to snub their noses at American soccer, but Chris Wheeler of the Daily Mail, who followed Manchester United on its tour of the United States, was impressed how Middle America has taken to the game.
In particular, he was impressed with the turnout at Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium, where more than 52,000 fans watched the Wizards upset United. "Kansas City," noted Wheeler, "may be slower paced and more remote than most U.S. cities, but there is no doubting its passion for the sport." Wheeler could not help but also note how refreshing it was Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber was accessible to the media. "It's hard to imagine," said Wheeler, "the chief executive of the FA pitching up in the press box at Wembley unless he'd taken a wrong turn somewhere along the way."--Daily Mail

THE BUZZ
Many Dynamos players were in attendance at Robertson Stadium last Saturday to see Brian Ching’s hat trick, which included a sensational bicycle goal, during the Dynamo’s 4-3 win over the Chicago Fire. The feat earned Ching the Major League Soccer Player of the Week award. . .The Future Stars, a program for Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club players under-6 to under-8, begins at Dyess Park on Sept. 7 with the following schedule: U6 (Tues.), U7 (Wed.), U8 (Thurs.). First Touch, a program for Pre-K boys and girls, begins Sept. 13. . .Thanks to Mary Fraase for last week’s “Some Serious Sweat” photo of grim-faced Dynamos’ players finishing up team fitness, which could have been titled, “Are we having fun yet?“ A week later, one player admitted: “Training is so much more fun with all that fitness work behind us.”. .Note to Dynamos Technical Director Mark Wilkinson: Keep your boots ready, Scotland may be calling. Glenn Davis reports that the Scottish National Team just summoned for duty forty-year-old David Weir, who played at Evansville University in the United States 21 years ago!. . .If you have items for the Coaches Memo or The Buzz, please email JWalker332@aol.com or phone 281-217-1612.

“Patience is passion tamed.”--Coach Lyman Abbott

A THOUGHT ON COACHING
“There are many ways for an assistant and head coach to work together. The key to remember is without proper communication beforehand, many of these opportunities will frequently be lost.”--Coach Lawrence Fine, www.finesoccer.com

ANOTHER THOUGHT
"I don't think I would say it the same way. . ."--U. S. men’s national team coach Bob Bradley, asked by interviewer Jonathan Overend on BBC Radio's Sportsweek if men's soccer was catching up to women's soccer in the United States after Overend noted that the men's game "lagging behind."—BBC

IT’S ONLY FAIR
Why is the same candy bar that ruins a child’s teeth, wonders Coach Cy Fair, a splendid source of energy for adults. A closed mouth gathers no feet, believes Coach Flo.
